Cucumber Tips

1. Prep soil: 6.0-7.0 soil ph. 60F or higher temp. Top Dress with compost heavily, add worm castings, mulch, and water in deeply for several days to pre-moisten soil and pull nutrients down a few days -1 wk before direct sow.

2.Pre-sprout seeds using a paper towel method or petri dish pre-sprout method.

3. Direct sow seed 1/2” deep as soon as the radical pushes point side down. Cover lightly with sifted soil. Water in.

4. Cucumbers love a liquid diet. Water deeply and slowly using consistent watering like drip irrigation in the morning. Always water deeply before using fertigating leaves and soil.

5. Fertigate: Prepare a 1/2 strength organic 5-10-10 liquid fertilizer. It can be worm castings tea, compost tea, or organic liquid fertilizer. Look for a formula Low on N and a bit heavier on the P and K. Foliar feed and let drip and seep into soil. Apply every 2 weeks always after deep watering.

6. Hand pollinate males even if females lower arn't growing. This will signal to the plant "It's safe to send out females, there are pollinators!"

7. Finger test soil before watering to ensure not overly soggy/saturated. Use moisture meter.

8. If your soil isn't holding moisture side dress and scratch in more rich worm castings, coco coir & compost to help the soil hold onto moisture longer between watering.

9. Maintain consistent slow-release watering. Pour slowly 1/2 gallon of water 2-3 times a week in the morning to each plant. Measure it in a vessel and mark 1/2 gallon for consistency.

10. Continue to apply a 1/2 strength liquid kelp foliar feed onto plants every 10 to 14 days for the first 8 to 12 weeks. Measure in a vessel to know how much you're feeding it.

Other tips:

Succession Sow cucumbers every 21 days from March to August 1/2” deep.

Pick often and early. Continue to hand pollinate as male and females emerge. Train up a trellis for air circulation. Use copper fungicide for powdery mildew. Use BT for caterpillars. Check underside leaves for insects, hand squish. Use azomite minerals to boost flavor!

I hope these tips help you! Look forward to hearing how it goes.
